Hi Pure, welcome to the forum! :)

Once a manufacturer finds out about a machine having a vulnerability such as an "empty", they re-write the program to remove the glitch.
This is copied onto a programmable rom (EPROM) which is sent out to machine distributors to replace the old (vulnerable) program.

Cheats for players never last long, it only takes a few collectors to report small amounts (if any!) earnings and the manufacturers soon put 2 and 2 together and switch the machines off till a re-chip is made.

In order to get any cheats or empties early you have to be way up the pecking order in the inner circle, which usually means paying £1000's for a simgle empty which will last a few weeks at the most.

Or someone goes in with an emptier and leaves the machine showing an IOU - great way to get the machine moved to another site or just have it switched of until a rechip, as Dave says.
